About Australia
Australia – world’s smallest continent and largest island. It is a great challenge for visitors, as well as many Australians, to grasp just how huge Australia is; approximately the same size as the European continent, excluding the former USSR, or the mainland area of the United States of America.

This vast land is the world’s flattest and, apart from Antarctica, driest continent, but includes an extraordinary diversity of environments. These range from the tropical rainforests and coral reefs of the north-east to the monsoonal wetlands of the north, the red deserts and salt lakes of the Outback and the more temperate forests, coastal plains, mountain ranges (and winter snowfields) of the south-east. Australia’s famous Outback stretches almost the entire way from western Queensland and New South Wales to the coastline of Western Australia. At 2228m above sea-level, Mt Kosciuszko, in the Great Diving Range, is the highest point in Australia, a more foothill by international standards. There are more than 700 national parks on the continent and 15 unique sites have been declared World Heritage Areas.

Australia’s state capitals are hundreds of kilometers apart, but they are linked by sealed highways which are suitable for all vehicles, including caravans. Rural areas of Australia ca be accessed from networks of graded roads, although 4-wheel drive vehicles may be necessary in some areas of the Outback, mountain ranges and certain national parks.

Touring Australia requires time and planning, but the rewards are substantial for travelers with a sense of adventure who are well prepared.
