Northern Territory
Covering approximately one sixth of Australia, the Northern Territory is the country’s most barren region – the ‘outback’ of popular imagination. The Territory’s rich Aboriginal heritage dates back as far as 50,000 years and its sunburnt terrain is dotted with evidence of this history. About 25% of the Territory’s population identify themselves as indigenous and more than 40 indigenous languages are spoken. The Aboriginal people retain their special link with the Territory through ceremonies, artworks and an intimate knowledge of the land and its seasons. About 50% of the Territory is classified as Aboriginal land and a permit may be needed to visit some areas.

The stunning ochre colors and vibrant red sands of the Top End, epitomized by the MacDonnell Ranges and Simpson Desert, contrast with the rainforests and savannah woodlands that meet the monsoonal Timor and Arafura seas.

The remoteness and diversity of the NT make it an ideal location for visitors looking for experiences off the beaten track. It is excellent for 4WD touring, and camel treks can be organized from Alice Springs, with a two-week journal to Rainbow Valley just one of the options. Bushwalkers will find much to discover on a variety of walking tracks, which range in degree of difficulty. Scenic flights are a more leisurely sightseeing option, and the center’s dry heat creates ideal conditions for gliding.
