 Victoria
Occupying the south-eastern corner of the continent, Victoria is Australia’s second smallest state after Tasmania. Its manageable size and efficient highway system make touring the state’s attractions relatively easy, with the most places within a five-hour drive of the state’s cultured and cosmopolitan capital city, Melbourne.
Victoria packs a lot within its boundaries and there is a diversity of natural, cultural, and historic areas to be explored. The southern coastline is spectacular and varied, taking in the Great Ocean Road to the west, and the wilderness of Wilsons Promontory and the Gippsland Lakes area to the east. Victoria’s magnificent Alpine region has much to explore and the Murray River, which stretches along the state’s northern border with New South Wales, is a delightful destination in itself.
Victoria’s goldfields exhibit the history of a dynamic period. Aboriginal history is also evident, with rock paintings and a cultural center in the Grampians region. Victoria caters well for the discerning travelers. Fresh produce is a specialty of the state, with gourmet focal points in the Milawa Gourmet Region near Wangaratta, and the Gourmet Deli Trail in West Gipplands. Wine lovers can tour 22 regions with more than 350 wineries, stretching from the Grampians in the south-west to Rutherglen in the north-east.
